In 1993, Virginia Fobes was talking with a local band teacher about how much fun it was to play in dance bands, and she decided to start a swing band using selected members from the Beloit Community Orchestra. Musicians were recruited from outside the orchestra as well to fill all the chairs, and we now have 14 members, from 4 counties. Fobes' original goal was to get a group of people together to play music just for the fun of it and to play at the Beloit Chautauqua every fall. Things sort of snowballed, and the first thing we knew, we were booking dances and concerts in the area. Larry Nelson took over as band leader and music librarian, and he had original music which he had purchased in the 40s from big bands that were quitting the business. We're still using this music today. |
